KDS Flymentor - The Verdict

I have spent the last couple of evenings reading every thread I could find about it here and on RR. After all this reading I still can decide if it's a good product or not.

What I do know about it is the following

1. It's cheaper that all the other options.
2. It's pretty basic. It can't save you from extreme 3D maneuvers. Functionality equivalent to Helicommand 3A.
3. I has a set up software that runs only on older 32bit machines (Win XP, etc)
4. You need to play a little with the drivers, COM ports, etc.
5. There is an optional programming box.
6. The firmware is probably stolen from Capron - The original Helicommand developer.

Then I read a ton of contradicting reviews and opinion dating back to 2009, when it was first released.
It will take over and crash your heli. It has to be turned on/off repeatedly in order to initialize. Or that it will work OK in the beginning and the performance will deteriorate after a few flying hours.

Some experienced modelers even issued a warning against using this device.

I am not flying 3D and I don't plan to learn in the future either.
I am sportflying a big Bergen Gasser which might occasionally carry some photographic equipment for amateur AP, so in theory Flymentor fits the bill perfectly.

I am not used in crashing though...

So my questions are:
Where do we stand now in February 2012?
Did they fix those issues with new hardware and/or firmware versions?
Are these problems real and do they affect all the units due to bad design or only a few lemon due to bad quality control?
